Volunteering Overview
The ASB Polyfest is a dynamic cultural experience, well-known to Auckland Secondary Schools and the wider Auckland community as the highlight of their event’s calendar year. Attracting over 95,000 spectators it is known as the biggest event of its kind in the world.
ASB Polyfest 2012 will be no different. The dedication from our volunteers is shown through the colour, festive sounds and the diverse cultural buzz. As this event grows in size and interest, with people of all ages, families, international guests and ethnic groups visiting and participating, it is evident that the need for more committed and passionate volunteers is required.
If you have yet to experience a role in volunteering, this event is a great place to start! The face of a kiwi volunteer is changing with the times, and with the Rugby World Cup 2011 is the support of its Volunteer Ambassador – Michael Jones.
“Volunteering takes a special kind of person and the characteristics are the same as a top Rugby player; motivation, commitment, hard work and ultimately passion.”- Michael Jones
Much like the All Black great, we are passionate in supporting New Zealanders who make the decision to give of their time. We are looking for a team of volunteers to be the first point of contact and welcoming face of the ASB Polyfest 2012, at the gates, public parking areas and out amongst the crowds. We aim to bring the buzz to the people from the moment they enter the event grounds! With much emphasis on aiming to achieve the ‘WOW’ factor, creating that memorable experience and as the leading nation in contribution made by volunteers, it is in our nature to engage in helping others and giving of our time where we feel rewarded in supporting and being active ambassadors. You can be assured that your time with us as a volunteer will be enjoyable as you will meet and work alongside some key figures within the community. There is every opportunity to network with the various teams that make up the ASB Polyfest workforce, where you could find yourself creating a career path towards the future.
If you have been waiting for an opportunity to be a part of the ASB Polyfest and you have the motivation, passion and commitment we are seeking , we would love to share this experience with you and make this event a memorable one for all who attend!
Why does POLYFEST 2012 need volunteers?
The ASB Polyfest attracts an audience of over 95,000 spectators. With such huge crowds of people entering our gates, volunteers assist us to ensure we are well equipped to provide and manage a safe environment, while delivering the best in customer service throughout the event and farewell our visitors satisfied with their experience.
We are particularly interested in hearing from potential Volunteers with a valid First Aid Certificate, current experience and knowledge of health and safety issues.
Will I get paid? What’s in it for me?
Volunteers are unpaid members of our workforce. There will be no exchange of financial reward (i.e. wages, tips, paid expenses etc) for the work you do. As a volunteer the rewards are in your participation, you will be fulfilled knowing you have played a vital part in the events production.
What is the minimum age to volunteer?
As all shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo a Police Check, you must be a minimum age of 17 years old. As we work closely with all secondary schools involved, we will not accept applications from enrolled students.
Will I need to do any training / attend critical meetings?
Yes. Once we have established the roles required we will advise where necessary the job specific training and critical dates compulsory to attend.
What days and hours could I be expected to work?
As each volunteer will undergo job and venue specific training, it is in the best interest of the workforce and festival patrons that we prefer volunteers are available for the week of festival. We envisage each volunteer to be on-site and on duty for a maximum of 3 hours at a time. Each shift will start and end with a daily briefing, and volunteers are expected to attend these briefings to get the latest updates and any additional information useful for that day.
Is there a uniform and can I keep it?
Yes. Each volunteer will be given one official volunteers t-shirt as uniform to use while on duty. This will be yours to keep!
Can I volunteer if I live outside of Auckland?
Yes. We welcome all residents outside of Auckland and extend the invitation to our international visitors, to join us and volunteer at the biggest event of its kind in the world!
All volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the event venue – should you require accommodation in the local area during the festival week, we can assist you in sourcing suitable accommodation.
What would help to increase my chances of being chosen as a Polyfest 2012 Volunteer?
Being available and flexible during the festival week would enable us to manage the volunteers team more effectively, and as a volunteer you will be able to familiarise yourself with the event venue. In saying that, we would prefer our volunteers to have the natural ability to create the infectious buzz wherever you’re based at the event venue and demonstrate a genuine interest in the event and its success.
How can volunteering help me in the future?
At the end of the festival, each volunteer will be gifted with a participation certificate. As New Zealand is a leading nation in contribution made by volunteers, you can continue to gift of your hard work and time to various other events or organisations around the country. Should you demonstrate a keen interest to volunteer at the ASB Polyfest for the following year, we will make contact with you in the first instance.
There is also every opportunity for our volunteers to create a memorable experience for a member of our workforce, where you could be approached in the future for possible paid employment. Members of our current staff have in previous years been introduced to the festival as volunteers and are now a part of the ASB Polyfest team.
